I have been working in the commercial diving business since 1972.
Greetings! I'm a 1973 graduate of the Commercial Diving Center in Wilmington, CA. Enjoyed all your pictures. Do you know where I can get a Joe Savoy air hat in good working order? Best helmet I've ever worn. Cheers Dennis
i have no comment for now
Billy, How's it hanging? Finished the project in the ME in May, now have a new DP vessel with a system just classed to DNV. Working the GOM till overseas picks up again. Life has been good. Hope all is well with you and family. Adios amigo, Jack

I have really enjoyed looking through and reading your diving history it looks like you had an amazing time doing it. I have recently been considering a career in commercial diving and have heard so many good and bad reports. I am still undecided but at least I now have a small window into the world of commercial diving thanks to you and your camera. Kind Regards Nathan

Hey Billy! Hows things with you?
Hi, great site, I am looking into becoming a diver, sent you and email for some advise, hope you reply, cheers, Jason.
Good to have a place to congregate and see what's happening with old work mates & the industry
Good memories. Remember the sitting down conga to "oops upside your head"
can you still lay down a pretty weld bead? You may, or may not remember me from Taylor. Just spent 3 months Mid east of Qatar as C. rep. for exxon. Now they've "delayed" their other big projects so am looking for anything to keep me afloat...thats a pun I guess. Steinmetz gave me this web site. I guess Global ind. is sinking like a stone. Whats that song....oh yeah "Another one bites the dust, and another ones gone and another ones gone and another one bites the dust" take care; if in boss position , hire me quick, hot commodity you know...!
interested commercial diving candidate..much respect for what u guys did in the late 70s..u guys were pioneers of commercial diving for sure..ur site has provided me with valuable info that is much appreciated...thanxs..

Hi there, I worked on the Hugh W Gordon for Taylors in the north sea in 1975, Tony Whittle was the dive supervisor. I was also on Bg339 only for a short while. Enjoyed looking at photos especially the guys in chambers, I could almost smell atomshere and hear the bell winch starting up, my 1st sat was in 1976 and the last 1988. You can check my web site out at www. oceantechnicalservices.com. good site good luck
2008

Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Still doing it nice to see well done Billy!
Great site Billy! I maybe have done a bit less time in Saturation compare to you, but hope to pass you by some time soon! If my health lets me. I still bloody like what i am doing, but have been currently diagnosed with 'Crohn Desease' but hope i can resume diving soon! I from Holland and currently living with wife and kids in Malaysia.. Regards and all the best buddy.. Bart Tonckens.
I have just finished an ALST course in scotland and am looking for a start in the industry your links have been very useful to me thank tou.
Well done, u r the best
well layed website, found your link on Longstreath. I am also a welder. Found your photos of the welding habitat very interesting.
Your website if fantastic . I myself started diving in the early 80"S but never started offshore until 1990 here in Canada and then oversea with Subtec Mid East and many others to this point. I never started sat until 1995 so there would be no way I could ever eclipse 2500 days. Actually you remind me of Buster Brown, he probably has as much time as yourself. Anyway I will keep checking in on your site on a regular basis because it's real. All the best Sully ps would you know Shane Lockhart, Shel Hutton, Terry Elding just to name a few ??
Hey there Billy Joe Great site. I'm still in the game, but sit behind a computer most of the time. I remember some of these pictures. Jerry Spencer was always taking pictures. Between him and Steinmetz there are a wealth of great photos of those bad ole days. Can you remember being 250-ft away from the bell and dragging the bell over with your hose to get to a clamp...with no bail-out bottle of course. We're lucky to be alive mate. Damn it was fun.
Billy- you did a great job of pulling a lot of memories together. Reminds me of coming down on the habitat the first time when you directed the crane and I closed my eyes- job well done.
Well done Billy always nice to see ole photos of the lads again. Still in the diving business and loving it!
I am so much impressed by seeing such things and also the man who always play with danger. My dear friend i will soon meet you on some or other site as soon i will be a part-1 diver. It would be my honor to be with u. BEST OF LUCK FOR UR FUTURE
beats my welding career mate
hey bud brilliant site. was never a diver but im one of the guys who welded diving bells & decompression chambers. we fabricated & welded them in aberdeen at two company,s called barry, hendry & cook which was bought over by a company called seaforth maritime in the late 70,s. dont know if u know a guy who i served my time with who later turned to diving called abbey ellington. keep up the good site. Graham Paterson
Good Site
love the photos, great selection
Great Photo's Great site
Great pictures, good to see some vintage shots of the North Sea. My father, Dennis Brown was the Med Officer on the Rocky 1 and 2 for a number of years, i'm pretty sure he was on the Smit Semi 1 and 2 as well. I spent 5 years working for Stena Offshore in the 90's on the Seawell, Wellsevicer and the Orelia, had some memorable runs ashore with the Sat boys!!! All the best Browno
Billy Joe the photo with Stu Rumbles is the Semi2 not the 1. I know I was a tech on board!! Went ashore with you in Yarmouth we stayed over night in the hotel. Loved your stories especially the one when you where getting beat to death in the bell in bad weather lost comms etc in the bell. Your two buddies one bleeding the other still in his hat for protection. Then bringing the bell up through the moon pool with the seas coming over the top SEMI 2!!! Been reading your comments on Longstreath nice to hear everything "A" ok.
I have enjoyed watching your pictures
Nice site Bill. I wish I had taken pictures of all the different and crazy crap I went through. Glad someone did. I started in 78 in the Gulf of Mexico w/ Global. Lots of Sat and even more Gas....sometimes I'm amazed we survived. I was one of the construction divers (never could weld worth a damn) on Global's 325' wet weld repair in the mid 80's in the GOM. It was a record at that time for deepest qualified wet weld. The wet welders were true artists, but they couldn't get to the work site unless we ran lines to it for them. Still in the business, but not diving anymore, mostly on the "planning" side. Mike "Mad Dog" Brown
Great Quality Pictures!
Great photos (please add some more accompanying stories). I especially enjoyed seeing pics of allot of gear I too spent some time at. I started oilfield work in Bass Strait with Jim Bromans crowd in early 70's and went wrong all over the world from there. I'm familiar with your name (& some of your escapades) its wonderful to put a face to that name. Kudos, bill
Love the pics. Can anyone help me with information on any of the people who may have been involved on the dive and salvage attempts on the Arabic in 1996, 1998 with Rockwater 1. We are funding and making a film about eh vessel. The people and the salvage attempts and could do with all the help we can get. We would particularly like to speak with Derek Moore and Jack Steinmetz. Thanks Alan Please respond to alantbooth@xtra.co.nz

nice trip down memory lane with your photos, good to see it's not all about the young bucks yet.
I have been a diver for 14 years now and its good to see how things were for divers back in the 70's and 80's. You mentioned you worked for IUC i was curious if you have any photos from working there, that was the first company I worked for when I graduated dive school in 93.
Hi Billy I was a tech on the Semi2 use to love your stories went ashore with you in Yarmouth off the Semi 2. That was the last I seen you, are you retired, still on the Isle of Man or back in California, Florida or what ever? Brilliant site, excellent, recognized some of your old dive buddies in the pics.
Hi, just taking a look at your site, I've just completed HSE part 1, and due to be in Aberdeen for diver medic at NHC, been applying for a start offshore but with no experience offshore is nearly impossible, even though I'm a electrical and mechanical engineer, I'm looking at your site with interest...many thanks, John
How do you do Billy, what's going on in your life, Good to see you are still addressing the diving industry, I owe you one, young man. All the Best Taff

Looking for someone who worked on the HMS Edinburgh dive
Hi Billy Joe Impressed with your website I was a dive tech on the Semi 2 worked with you a few times. Came ashore with you in Yarmouth stayed at the same hotel. I all ways remember the story over a beer in the bar. Bad weather decision made to send down the bell in a severe gale and the powers to be! You know who, wanted you to shut a valve or open it some thing to do with payment or not to 2W from the oil company. You where the bell man, 2 divers out, bell goes on its side floods, up electrics gone etc. You get the first diver back, cuts his head in the bell the other gets back leaves is hat on for protection bell being flung all ove in the bad weather. Well you know the story you told me. Great site! Glad to hear some one as retired OK Bob Davies DSV Skandi Patagonia Argentina.
Hi Billy ,just wondering what you are up to! living the good life in the states i think. I am mostly on the Polaris. cheers
Great sites, great experiences! Enjoy your well earned retirement my friend!
Richie... The police where pissed off when they read the bumper sticker!
The car was a total wreck, on its roof. I had 4 broken ribs and a punchier lung. The police asked me if I had been drinking! I was expecting them to ask me what religion I was or maybe who my next of ken was. Nope. They just wanted to know if I had been drinking. I told them to read the bumper sticker.
"HELL YES I'M DRUNK. DID YOU THINK I'M A STUNT DRIVER?"
If the car wreck doesn't hurt you bad enough they will...
BILLY WELL DONE ON THE SITE KEEP IT GOING. YOU ARE THE BEST STORY TELLER OF ALL TIME. I'VE STILL GOT THAT BUMPER STICKER FROM THAT HIRE CAR YOU ROLLED OVER OUTSIDE ELLON SCOTLAND. ALL THE BEST. RICHIE CORBETT EX HABITAT RIGGER.
Your the best story teller of all time. Funny thing is they are all true. Cheers Billy. Mick Gill / Richie Corbett habitat riggers.
Billy thanks for the memories. I worked with you lots offshore and onshore for Rockwater. Boy could you tell a story thing is they were all true. I was on your last trials at stoneywood and remember you saying this was your last welding trials. I was the habitat rigger with Micky Gill. I've lots of memories of all the American diver welders you were the funniest. Take care Billy. Richard.

I wish that I would have taken picture then. I work from June of 1984 to March of 1988. I had the joy of working with Roger D Holdsworth, George Hill, and many more in Mexico on the George R. Brown and the L.B. Meators.
Hi, just happened upon your salty site. I was engaged to Ed Taylor when I was sixteen. I still have so many fond memories of Taylor Diving & Salvage, the people, the Jesting, and Marc and John Valz. I'm ancient now, but I guarantee you (as they say in New Orleans) those guys were HOT!--haha! Mind the rudder or meet the rock--caroleann

Check it out. http://www.billyjoe.net/vietnam/ I have a ton of work to do to this diving sight, but I've lost interest for now. I'm enrolling for spring quarter. I'm going to learn how to write so I can tell the story about all you nutty *ucks. Keep in touch Ken. Hell ya I remember you Dave. Your Dad once advised me to walk up behind my old lady and start rubbing all over her and if she was up to it I had a good one. If she refused me diverse her. He single again? lol. Good luck out there and pay attention, take care of your self. I don’t give a shit what they say to you divers, what you do is dangerous. Take it from me. Dangers no stranger. Bill

Oh I do love you boys, and the welds where just for fun. Remember all the great times we had in the rubber gear? I’m having sun, fun, and ducking hurricanes. Cheers lads. Glad you found work cutting out my fucked up welds. I knew someone would get around to it. Ted Hatchet lives!
Hi William, You may not remember us but we still remember those long lonley nights we spent at sea holding hands under the blankets, you always did have smooth hands it must be the kid gloves you liked to wear?, I have recently come back from Peterhead and you'll be pleased to know that the bollard you used to squat over is still there. you remember giving Peterhead? Many years ago I worked for b&r at their hunting camp in west Texas, while there I met Mark Bansivich the then owner of Taylor Diving, I went to work for him and moved to Terrytown. I worked in the shop and hoped to become a diver, that did not happen due to family problems, death in family. My question is what happened to Taylor, did they fold up or did they get absorbed by Halliburtion? I had some good friends there and was wondering if there is a site for former Taylor employees, Thank you for your time, and as they use to say in the old days" no sea to rough no muff to tuff"
Real Good Site Billy. I'Z Can't Hold My Breath Long Enough Ta Get Outta The Bathroom :) Take Care, Semper Fi. Ps. Rickster And Myself Wills Come And Seez Ya Again. Semper Fi.
England. I Am A Part 1 Diver Aged 22 Born On 13.6.80 And Dived About 130 Times Could You Please Help Me Or Tell Me The Best Company To Contact For The North Sea Diving As My Ambition All My Life Is To Work As A Diver In The North Sea. Thanx
Hi Moses This is probably A joke from the Uk divers but just in case your for real. The United Kingdom Department Of Health And Safety (HSE) have regulated minimum requirements for divers. These requirements are much higher than any in the USA. So the oil companies want to see divers with HSE qualifications on there contracts. The USA dive schools are not teaching or certified divers to HSE standard. No HSE ticket, No chance. The oil companies want the diving companies to provide divers with HSE qualifications. It is that simple. You need UK certs. Good luck.
Why Can't We Work In Foreign Countries Without Being Brit, Canada, Australia And Other Certs But ADC Accepts Divers From Other Countries Work Here. What Makes Them Better Then Us Homeboys.
Scotland. Hay Ho Billy Joe, Have You Been Sewing Any More Rubber Gloves Into Peoples Heads Lately? All The Best Tip
New Zealand. Interesting Site. I Did HSE Part1 (Air Diving) At The Underwater Centre In Scotland Many Years Ago But Couldn't Get A Job. Finally Made It In Aviation. Airline Flying Sucks But Flying Freight Is Great. No Sea Too Rough, No Muff Too Tough If We're Alive We Dive At Five
Bill, during the year I was in Guantanamo Bay I did a little diving, mainly just snorkeling but I have a love to this day of diving in the ocean especially near reefs like in Cuba. Its such a serene world down there for me, plus the colors and variety of fish in the reefs is remarkable. I wanted to continue and progress in diving but severe injury ended that dream. We had a diving club in Cuba, we called ourselves the USMC Reef Raiders. Talk soon. Sarge.
Hi Billy! Long time no SEA!! Just got back from Australia on a hyperbaric job, me, Shep and the rest. You were mentioned a few times and I wanted to get in touch and ask how you were. Drop me a line at the above address. Cheers Billy Steve Lawson
